As Canada is finally on a road to recovery from the pandemic, employers are actively looking to fill hundreds of thousands of vacancies in all sectors across the country. Immigration has now become a top priority in order to fuel Canada’s economy and to build a strong foundation for future growth.
Businesses and employers are on a lookout for skilled workers and today, the Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced that Express Entry draws will soon resume. He also mentioned that invitations for candidates to apply for permanent residence will begin in early July.
The covid related travel restrictions delayed the processing of overseas applications leading to an increase in the size of the processing inventory. The government temporarily paused ITAs (invitations to apply) under the federal high-skilled streams, including the Canadian experience class, federal skilled worker class and federal skilled trades class in order to better manage this inventory.
Invitations to apply will now resume in early July, and the new applications will be processed within the 6-month service standard.
“With the economy growing faster than employers can hire new workers, Canada needs to look at every option so that we have the skills and labour needed to fuel our growth. Immigration will be crucial to easing our labour shortage, and these measures aim to address pressing needs in all sectors across the country, while providing more opportunities for recent graduates and other applicants to build their lives in Canada and continue contributing to our short-term recovery and long-term prosperity.”
– The Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship
Minister Fraser also announced a new temporary policy. Under this policy, international graduates with expiring temporary status can stay in Canada longer and gain work experience to have a better chance at qualifying for permanent residency.
Starting in summer 2022, any international student whose post-graduation work permit is expiring between January and December 2022 will qualify for an additional open work permit of up to 18 months.
These talented and skilled international graduates will play a vital role in addressing Canada’s labour shortage. This additional open work permit will allow applicants gain valuable work experience and will make their Express Entry profile stronger.
To help bring even more skilled workers quickly to Canada, Canada has made over 156,000 final decisions on permanent residence applications and welcomed over 113,000 new permanent residents. They have also processed more than 100,000 work permit applications.
Canada’s Express Entry Program
Express Entry is Canada’s flagship application management system to invite candidates for permanent residence under the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Federal Skilled Trades Program, the Canadian experience class and a portion of the Provincial Nominee Program.
Through Express Entry, candidates submit their profiles in the express entry poll. The profiles are then ranked, and periodically, applicants with the highest ranking points are invited to apply for permanent residence.
The processing time of Express Entry Program is super fast and it is one of the most sought after Canada Immigration programs. However, there is no set schedule but usually an express entry draw happens every 2 weeks.
