Overview of Northwest Territories Nominee Program (NTNP)

There are three main categories that provide several immigration streams:

  1. Northwest Territories Express Entry – This stream is for foreign skilled workers whose  profiles are present in the federal Express Entry pool. In order to be eligible for this category, candidates must have a valid job offer from an eligible Northwest Territories employer.
  2. Northwest Territories Employer Driven – These immigrantion streams provide opportunities to foreign nationals with valid experience in NOC Skill Level 0, A, B, C, or D and a full-time, permanent job offer from a qualified employer.
  1. Northwest Territories Business Driven – These  streams are for business owners and entrepreneurs looking to establish a new business in the Northwest Territories. 


How to qualify for a NTNP

Requirements for Northwest Territories Express  Entry 

Eligibility Criteria 

  • Meet the requirements for the Skilled Worker Stream under the Northwest Territories’ Nominee Program.
  • Be eligible for one of the three federal economic immigration programs: 
    • Federal Skilled Worker, 
    • Federal Skilled Trades, or 
    • Canadian Experience Class

– Have an online profile in Canada’s Express Entry Pool.

– Willing to live permanently and work in the Northwest Territories.

– Have the Express Entry Profile Number and Job Seeker Validation Code issued by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) Express Entry Pool.

Requirements for Northwest Territories Employer-Driven Streams 

Eligibility Criteria for Skilled Worker Stream

  • Have a valid job offer for a permanent full-time position (minimum 30 hours per week) from a qualified employer.
  • Have relevant work experience in an occupation that falls into a high skill level category. 
  • Have the required certification or accreditation to be able to perform in their role.
  • Meet the territorial certification, licensing, or registration requirements of the job if applicable.
  • Proof of sufficient financial or settlement support for living in the NWT for the first few months. 
  • Have language  proficiency in either English or French.
  • Not be a refugee claimant


Eligibility Criteria for Entry Level/Semi-Skilled Occupations

  • Have  a valid job offer for a permanent full-time position (minimum 30 hours per week) from a qualified employer.
  • The job offer needs to fall into NOC skill levels C or D.
  • Hold a temporary work permit at the time of application and have worked in the same position for six months.
  • Proof of sufficient financial or settlement support in the NWT for the first few months. 
  • Have the relevant skill set and required work experience for the specific occupation.
  • CLB level  4 in English or French.
  • Not be a refugee claimant.

Requirements for Northwest Territories Business Stream 

Eligibility Criteria

  • Invest a minimum of CAD 300,000 to establish a new business or buy an existing one within Yellowknife, or $150,000 outside.
  • Provide valid proof that you have a net worth of at least CAD 500,000 if you are planning to establish a business inside Yellowknife, or $250,000 outside.
  • Provide a good faith deposit of $75,000 to the Department of Industry, Tourism, and Investment if your application is accepted.
  • Minimum score of 4 for the Canadian Language Benchmark in either English or French.
  • Demonstrate a knowledge of the NWT and its economy.
  • Make a minimum one exploratory visit to the NWT to learn about the regions’ business environment.
  • Submit a business plan validated by a third party professional
  • Willing to settle, live, and work full-time in the NWT.
