Canada’s welcoming nature and easy immigration processes have made it an ideal place for talented skilled individuals to migrate and settle  in this land by becoming a permanent resident of the country.

There are a lot of benefits permanent residency in Canada offers making it an attractive and currently one of the top destinations for migration:

1. Right to Live and Work in Canada

Three Canadian cities, Calgary (third), Vancouver (fifth) and Toronto (eighth), have made to the top ten in the list of the world’s most livable cities in the Global Livability Index 2022. In addition to this, according to a report by  US News and World Report, Canada was listed as the best country to live and work  in the world.

2. Lucrative Job Opportunities

Due to rapid economic growth and a technology boost, Canada has long experienced labor shortages, which have been further worsened by the pandemic. Unemployment rates are at record lows and the demand for skilled workers is at an all time high. Canada currently has more than 900,000 unfilled jobs – a huge number that can be filled with a ready to work talent pool a.k.a immigrants.

3. Allows you to bring your family along!

Canada PR lays special emphasis on family ties and so family members (spouse, dependent children, parents) can also live, study or work in Canada if they become permanent residents.

4. Free Education for children

The government of Canada provides free education up to Grade 12 for all children of permanent residents. Canadian education has three levels: primary, secondary, and higher education which is totally free for children upto 18 years of age.

Not only this, university education comes at a subsidised rate for your children if you are a permanent resident of Canada.

5. Universal Healthcare

The Canadian government offers universal healthcare to all its subjects including permanent residents. In other words, if you are a permanent resident, the medical care for you is completely free covering the prescription drugs that are paid through the taxes.

Please note, this doesn’t include the dental and eye care. You are also eligible to apply for public health insurance as a permanent resident in Canada.

6.  Social Benefits

Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) works to improve the overall quality of life for all Canadians including permanent residents.

Social benefits you get as  permanent residents include COVID-19 benefits, child benefit, Employment Insurance, pensions and benefits for housing, training, education, family, people with disabilities and so on.

7. Road to Canadian Citizenship

Permanent residence is the first step to getting the Canadian passport. Permanent residence visa is valid for 5 years.

In order to be eligible for Canadian citizenship, you need to be physically present in the country for 1095 days, that is three out of five years.

Please note: Only those 5 years preceding the date of your citizenship application will be valid.

8. Freedom to Move and settle anywhere in Canada

The PR card gives you the freedom to move outside, inside or remain in Canada any number of times you want. You can also make a move to another province and  make it your home.

Started in 1998, the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) is the 2nd most attractive immigration program to migrate to Canada as a skilled worker after Express Entry. Canada has 13 political divisions, with ten largely self-governing provinces and three territories with a lesser degree of self-government. Each province and territory has its own exclusive economic and geographic needs.

Together with each province, the Canadian government operates an immigration program called the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP). Each program is designed to meet the province’s or territory’s needs for business individuals, investors, or skilled workers.

All provinces have their own rules that target specific groups. The rules contain requirements to qualify as a nominee under a program. Provinces do not approve permanent resident status, but nominate it.

The power to approve permanent resident status rests with the federal government. This is why Provincial programs are referred to as “nominee” programs.

4. Business Immigration

5. Atlantic Immigration Program

The minimum education requirements for migrating to Canada is the Canadian equivalent of secondary school level education. However, you gain more points if you have higher educational qualifications such as bachelors and masters. You gain even more points if any of these educational credentials are acquired in Canada.

IELTS and CELPIP are used to assess your English proficiency and you need to have a minimum band  score to  qualify. An applicant gets extra points for the ability to adapt to the country. If you have a spouse with an eligible IELTS score or blood relation in Canada, you can get extra points.
